On the wedding day, it's not possible; one professional can't simultaneously shoot both. Brides may not be aware of the intricacies of our work without specific technical knowledge, and that's okay. I'll explain everything now.
In modern times, with the ease of capturing video and photos on phones, there's an illusion that a photographer with professional equipment can easily handle this "simple" task. However, this is a significant misconception.
I know fantastic photographers who struggle with shooting video; for them, holding the camera horizontally is already stressful. Personally, I spent a long time shooting in the fine art style and got used to the vertical film frame. Even now, 60-70% of my work is vertical. I also know excellent and renowned videographers, but ask them to take photos, and they might experience stress.
At the very least, a photographer and a videographer require different equipment for shooting.
For a brief shoot without an event, a photographer may only need a camera and a lens, but a videographer would additionally require a DN filter, stabilizer, as well as sound equipment. If we're talking about a full day, the videographer's equipment needs multiply significantly.
In photography, I can create a vertical frame, cropping out unwanted objects. For example, in a narrow hotel space filled with various people, from relatives and friends to wedding professionals. I can direct the couple in action without providing context and capture the moment. I don't have to worry too much about changing scene lighting and the temperature conditions of the day (sunlight/shadow) since shooting in RAW format allows me to make mistakes without concern and address them later at home.
Only a horizontal frame, especially when we talk about wedding videos and not cinematic formats, etc.
The meaningfulness of the moment is crucial; the action should signify something, at least answer the simple question: "Why?"
There's a more precise control of light and temperature since in post-production (editing and adjusting light/color), it's more challenging to correct lighting or temperature errors.
When you approach a photographer/videographer, you see their work, and naturally, you imagine a similar result. However, this result is the culmination of well-thought-out work in one direction, not switching between tasks.
In most cases, brides just want to capture reels for social media, but this is an entirely different request than wanting a short video. I've tried multiple times to shoot video during weddings, both for myself and for the couple upon their request.
During the shoot, I simply forget that I need to periodically capture video because my brain is already focused on the idea of capturing brief photo moments, not paying attention to dialogues or monitoring how the event unfolds for the video. It's a different brain process. Even the most skilled professional can't juggle both. The brain is single-task oriented; it just switches between the multitude of tasks.
If a photographer has the time and timing allows them to capture reels for you, or if they do it for themselves, it means there's time and conditions for it, but it's not a full-fledged video.
For shooting reels, you can use the soundtrack provided by the social network, but if you want to distribute this video on the internet, popular music won't work due to copyright. For these purposes, videographers look for music on stock platforms where they can purchase the rights for usage and use it for their purposes. It's just a nuance that not everyone knows or considers.
